To be honest, as a kid, I've always thought drawing can only be for those with natural talents. Oh, how wrong I was.
Long story short, I was really bad at drawing class during my junior high. I was even at risked of repeating a grade due to my really bad final art assessment. I got a 4 out of 10, 5 is the minimum for passing. I was devastated and despised drawing so so so much. That was until furries enabled my passion for drawing, haha. But even so, I never dared picking up a crayon until I almost graduated high school.
Fast forward to my final year of high school in 2010s. That was when I started seeing a guy, who's also an artist till this day. We weren't officially dating but we kept hanging out and he encouraged me to draw something. And to my surprise, I did, but it was ugly. But at that moment, something stirred inside me.
When I started attending university, that was when we started dating as well. We met this Japanese Canadian guy from a game called AFK Arena, turned out, he was an artist too and his skills were way beyond my bf's. With my bf's and his persuasion, I digged into arts more and more. Tough time but it was something. And then 2021 came.
2021 was a leap forward for me, the first year when I started taking arts more seriously. Well, not that seriously, but I started practicing more and more. Compared to previous years when I was too afraid to draw because, ya'know, "it's too ugly" or "it's hideous, I don't wanna continue" sort of stuff.
This time, I embraced the ugliness, I kept moving forward. I also realized that, no matter how bad your drawing was, you could improve it by keeping practice, unlike singing, where your voice matters more. I also blamed the adults for saying "you must have talents before you can draw" when I was a kid.
NO, you absolutely NOT. You can definitely get better at drawing with or without taking classes. Albeit taking one will help you a lot. Which is why I ended up attending one which lasted for 2 months. I'm so glad I did because I understood more about fundamentals. With that, I understood more about shapes and anatomy.
So yea, do arts, don't be too afraid, no one will judge how ugly you draw when you just get started.
